December 2019 Band of the Month: Nasty Cherry

Your new favorite band.

Nasty Cherry, your new favorite band, is making waves with their catchy and energetic pop rock songs. These four girls came together with the magic of the beloved Charli XCX. Gabi Bechtel (lead singer), Chloe Chaidez (guitarist), Debbie Knox-Hewson (drummer), and Georgia Somary (bassist) are the perfect quartet band.

Before Charli brought Nasty Cherry to life, Bechtel and Somary knew little about music and being in a band. With practice, they quickly became confident with their talent. Drummer Debbie Knox-Hewson joined Charli XCX recently on tour. Chloe Chaidez, along with Nasty Cherry, is in the alternative rock band Kitten. If you’re interested, go check them out now on their U.S. tour with Waterparks (through December 23).

Last month, Netflix released I’m With The Band: Nasty Cherry. This series, featuring six unique episodes highlighting the life and inside world of Nasty Cherry, is the best way to spend an afternoon (that’s right- binge it now!). For all fans of music, and people working in the music industry, this show highlights almost everything you’d need to know about creating and joining a band.

I recently had the chance to talk to Nasty Cherry! Continue reading to learn more about the life of your new favorite band of 2019.

I’m With The Band: Nasty Cherry is officially available for streaming on Netflix! Between the launching of the series and your growing popularity on social media, how are you four feeling?

It feel surreal on many levels! We finished filming quite a while ago and since then have been gigging and writing lots so, in some ways, we feel quite detached to all the drama, emotions and hangovers of the show. But it’s still such a trip to share it with everyone. We love that it’s resonated with so many people and we hope the Netflix platform will bring us one step closer to world domination.

So, I watched the series in one sitting and I would watch it 100 more times. Between the six episodes, what is your favorite moment and/or a moment that has impacted you the most?

Glad you enjoyed it. Without giving any spoilers, some highlights were pushing someone into our swimming pool, filming the music video to our first single, “Win” and discovering that marmite is in fact a very real trigger for homesickness. Someone online made a Top Ten Video of our best cries, which also feels quite magical to us.

Give us an inside look on the series. What was it like working together (and alongside Charli XCX) to create brand new friendships and music?

It was a rollercoaster. Through living, writing and partying together, we were all forced to become incredibly close incredibly quickly. Charli XCX put the band together. Throughout the process, she was a constant source of advice and inspiration. It was definitely tough at times – as you can see if you watch it! – But we feel stronger for it and we’re really proud to show the process of starting the band, writing together, gigging and releasing our music.

For aspiring musicians, what one piece of advice would you give?

Don’t get discouraged. The music world is like the wild, wild West. But like Lil Nas once famously said, “take your horse down the old town road, and ride till you can’t no more.”

You just released your debut EP entitled Season 1. What is the EP about? What message should fans should take away from the EP?

Have fun! Ladies, make music with your friends – even if they’ve never made music before. Have a grown up sleep over to this EP- and watch our TV show whilst your at it.

Nasty Cherry is going on tour early next year. What are you looking forward to the most as you travel?

Being sexy with my cherry girls and rocking out with our new beloved fans : )

Overall, this year has been really busy for you. What have you learned about yourselves as a band that you will take into the new year?

At the start of the year we were still getting to know each other and forming friendships in a crazy and unique situation as we were being filmed. We had to be more honest for the cameras than you normally would with friends and band mates, but in that we found our own way of being together and writing together that’s brought us incredibly close. There’s a trust between us that affects everything we do.

Along with the tour, what should Nasty Cherry fans be on the lookout for? What do you hope to accomplish in 2020?

More music! We are impatient and have a lot of things we want to release. Get matching cherry tattoos on our asses.

Is there anything else you would like to share?

The first thing we do in every session is order food. It’s always something that smells strongly so the room kind of smells like a kitchen for the whole day.

Make sure to stay in touch with the cherry girls!
