Cloe Wilder: The Indie-Pop Artist You Should Be Listening To

Cloe Wilder is a must-listen for any young indie-pop fan. At just fourteen years old, Cloe has used her mature vocals to her advantage when songwriting to create beautiful, melancholic, and honest melodies that speak volumes about life as a teenager.

Cloe describes her music career as “meant to be” since she was contacted by a producer after performing in her hometown. She started making her talent public in 2018, when she began to cover songs by some of her favorite artists including Halsey, Billie Eilish, and Lana Del Rey, who she grew up listening to. Her career as a musician has taken off since then, with one of her first major performances being a fundraiser for those affected by the wildfires in California.

Cloe kicked off 2020 with the release of her single “Crying When I Shouldn’t,” an ambient piece with soft harmonies throughout the chorus. In June, Cloe released her second song of the year titled “You and Lonely,” which speaks about her inner struggle with her social life and feeling lonely. The first song off of her upcoming EP was released on September 2nd. The single titled “It’s True” was written about the uncomfortable transition between traveling to Los Angeles for music and then attending “regular eighth grade” in Florida. Cloe went on to explain how she was anxious which is a feeling that she hardly experiences because she was living two separate lives, and learning how to balance the differences during a worldwide pandemic.

COVID-19 has done good things for Cloe as an artist. She described how the extra downtime has been good for songwriting and that there was no excuse not to write music while in quarantine. Cloe was also able to realize how important it is to maintain social media accounts and be present online during times when face-to-face interaction was not encouraged. She was able to interact with her fans via backyard Instagram livestreams and keeping up on other platforms like Twitter.

Cloe Wilder’s debut EP titled Teenage Lullabies is set to be released in January of 2021. Cloe describes the sound of the EP as being angelic with some bedroom indie sounds incorporated, since the album was created in her bedroom. Each song tells the story about a life experience she has had within the past two of her teenage years. Cloe shared this lyric from her single “It’s True,” which encompasses a central idea of the EP; “I make friends and then I break them, what a teenage lullaby.”
