I was running errands with a long to-do list in hand when I pulled out my phone to check my emails. I got a last minute approval to cover Phoenix at The Ryman Auditorium. I became frantic, realizing I was not prepared whatsoever, having just recovered from a full week of back to back showcases at Americanafest and Moon River Festival. I grabbed my equipment and rushed over to the venue. I made it just in time.
Phoenix is an indie-pop band originally from Versailles, France. They have been around since the 1990’s but they caught my attention with their album, Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix in 2009. Many of their songs were on repeat throughout my high school and college career. This semi-sheltered music enthusiast never got to see the majority of the bands I loved growing up, live on stage. Therefore you can imagine how excited I was to add Phoenix to my list of favorite bands seen live. Let alone documenting the experience.
They performed their classics along with their new material. What really made Phoenix’s set stand out was their incredible use of lighting and color. Although the unique use of lighting was challenging for this photographer, it was captivating and thrilling to watch. I highly recommend catching them live. But be warned, it’s not meant for anyone sensitive to flashing lights. No joke!
Phoenix will be releasing their new album Alpha Zulu on November 4.
