Waves of Cynicism: A Review Of Wave Break’s New Single “Call Me Cynical”

We all know people who take more than they give, doesn’t think about anyone but themself, and only helps when it benefits them. If this sound like someone you know, I have the perfect feminine rage song for you. Wave Break released their new single “Call Me Cynical” today. It’s a shout out to all of the daily miseries we put up with from the selfish people in this world.

Wave Break, a rock band from the Jersey Shore, includes lead singer Kelly, guitarist Tom, and drummer Victoria. Wave Break released an EP titled Armory in 2018 which was followed by their album Puzzle Pieces in 2021. Since then, the band has been working tirelessly on their upcoming EP and touring on the east coast, even getting to play some iconic venues such as The Stone Pony. In April of 2023, they released one of their best performing singles, “Spark,” which was a preface of what to expect on their upcoming EP due to come out mid 2024.

Kelly says their new song, “calls out the selfishness of the human condition. People have a tendency to only think about themselves to the detriment of society, and that’s what it’s about.” The music video is a funny take on the song based on the premise of a music video shoot gone wrong. It portrays Kelly prepared and ready to shoot the music video, but her bandmates are off in their own little worlds ignoring what is right in front of them. It perfectly illustrates how some people just cling on and use others when it is easier for them. After listening to both “Spark” and “Call Me Cynical,” the direction of their upcoming EP clearly has a sense of anger and want for justice. If these songs are any indication of the energy that they plan to bring, this EP will for sure be one you’ll want to head bang to.

“Call Me Cynical” is a song that everyone can relate to. My favorite lyric in it is from the chorus and it says, “It’s not that hard to be there It’s not that hard just to care. Wake up and see what you’ve done. Now we’re hurtling for the sun.” The song ends with the simple line of “I won’t hold my breath for you to learn,” which I think is the perfect way to summarize how it feels to know someone like that. When you’re trying to resolve an issue with someone that is so wrapped up in themselves, it’s like asking a brick wall to tell you what they did. There is no point in continuously fighting when it always ends one sided.

You can check out Wave Break on all forms of social media. Make sure to listen to “Call Me Cynical” on all streaming platforms today! Get all your anger out and support a really sick east coast band at the same time.
